Nasal surgery

In this sub-area, we specialise in the treatment of obstructed nasal breathing and sleep apnoea syndrome, and nasal correction procedures.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) and breathing disorders of the nose can both manifest themselves through snoring. The treatment options range from simple oral appliances to minor surgical procedures in order to improve nose breathing up to major osteotomies (see maxillofacial surgery).

Obstructed nasal breathing

Often, obstructed nasal breathing cannot be cured simply by straightening the nasal cartilage (septal perforation) or reducing the turbinates (conchotomy). If the anterior sections of the nose are anatomically narrow, an appropriate small osteotomy at the osseous base of the nose can permanently widen the space to the nasal cavity.

We use both proven examination procedures and the latest diagnostic methods to create a comprehensive picture of your situation and define the right treatment strategy for you.

Sleep apnoea syndrome

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is an increasingly common condition which is often wrongly assessed initially, and sometimes even underestimated. Sufferers complain of a gradual deterioration in performance with unpleasant tiredness during the day due to disrupted breathing at night. Disruptions with repeated and prolonged pauses in breathing lead to a critical reduction in blood oxygen saturation.

The consequences of untreated obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome include cardiovascular illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke. Links with diabetes mellitus, migraines, depression, etc. have also been described. Patients are almost always snorers, but the causes are varied, meaning not every snorer is an OSAS sufferer.

The treatment options are just as varied – depending on individual circumstances, these range from conservative behavioural measures to tooth-supported splints or nocturnal respiration equipment. Minor and more complex surgical procedures cannot be ruled out.

Nasal correction procedures

In the event of a nasal trauma, or to complement a profile improvement by skeletal measures, an undesirable or upsetting nose shape can be corrected and enhanced by rhinoplasty.
